TRENTON, NJ –-(Ammoland.com)- The New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (NJOA) has cautioned the general public, municipalities, and officials in Trenton about the need for black bear management, including the use of hunting, since our founding in 2007.

This was done to advance sound public policy, educate the public, and counter misleading claims by animal rights extremists and the regurgitation of these claims by many agenda driven media outlets opposed to hunting.

We applaud the Christie Administration, Department of Environmental Protection, and Division of Fish and Wildlife, for understanding the need for game management as it relates to environmental stewardship – including the protection and sustainability of our natural resources.

WEST MILFORD – Police say a 22-year-old man was killed over the weekend after an encounter with a bear in the Apshawa Preserve.

West Milford police say five friends from Edison were hiking in the Apshawa Preserve when they encountered the bear on Sunday. Police say the group became frightened and ran in different directions. They noticed one member was missing when they regrouped.

Officers from the West Milford police department and West Milford Search and Rescue unit began searching for the missing hiker. The search team later located the body of 22-year-old Darsh Patel

“Evidence at the scene indicated that the victim had been attacked by a bear,” police said in a news release early Monday. The bear was located and euthanized at the scene.

State wildlife officials are assisting with the investigation.

The Apshawa Preserve is a 576-acre natural area used for hiking and bird watching.
