Police were called to a Charlotte elementary school Tuesday after a man allegedly pulled a gun on kids for throwing rocks at his home during recess.
“We looked and we actually saw the gun. It was amazement, shock, fear, a little bit of panic for us,” said Brittany Bowditch, a Pre-K teacher at Windsor Park Elementary, whose son, Jalen, was one of the kids throwing rocks.
Bowditch, who said the man actually had two guns – a handgun and a long gun – rounded up the kids and took them inside while another teacher called 911.
The school was placed on lockdown and officers responded to the 911 call but no arrests were made because there was no evidence that any crime had been committed. In fact, authorities were unable to locate the guns the man was accused of pointing at the kids.
Nonetheless, the students – at least for now – will not be playing in that area of the schoolyard anymore.
Bowditch said to disregard life in that manner is unacceptable.
“There’s no question the kids shouldn’t have been throwing the rocks, but the homeowner’s response went too far,” Bowditch said. “By pointing a gun, you almost take away that learning moment and when fear sets in, I don’t know (that) you have the same opportunity to grow and learn the same way.”
The school made counseling available for students who may have been traumatized by the incident, but as for Jalen, he said he’ll never again throw rocks at other people’s homes.
