A mother of two fatally shot her estranged ex-boyfriend after he broke into the family’s home, attacked her and her children Wednesday morning in Abilene, Texas.
The incident began Christmas evening when 34-year-old Earnest Gonzales went to his ex-girlfriend 33-year-old Lawanda Taylor’s house and tried to enter by kicking in the door, Abilene Police Sgt. Lynn Beard said in a press release. But Gonzales quickly fled once he found out that Taylor had called the police and that they were on their way.
That next morning at around 2, Gonzales returned to the house and started yelling death threats at her from the yard. He then forced open the door and proceeded to attack Taylor and her two kids – a 16-year-old and a newborn baby.
At some point during the dispute Taylor grabbed her .380-caliber handgun and shot Gonzales once in his “left side.” He then left the house and when police arrived they found him collapsed in the yard. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he died.
Although authorities did not specify why Gonzales returned to see his estranged ex-girlfriend or really anything about the relationship, they do suggest that it’s a case of domestic abuse as counselors from a nearby victim crisis center were also called to assist the victims.
However, Reporter News, an Abilene newspaper, reported that Gonzales had a criminal record citing aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and also harassing communication as charges, all of which happened in 1995 and ’96. In addition, his body was sent to the local medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, meaning authorities may suspect he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Police said Taylor legally owned her gun and while the case will be presented to a county grand jury they do not expect any criminal charges to be filed against her.
