Rock Island’s upcoming September Premiere Auction has several collections’ worth of vintage Colt revolvers including Squarebacks, a Walker and a factory shoulder stocked model.
The auction has well over 500 Colts, mostly revolvers, and spans the line from museum pieces and early rares to more affordable offerings for the collector eager to flesh out their wheel gun niche. Here are some of the more exciting specimins we saw:
The crown jewel appears to be this set of Colt Model 1851 Navy style “Squareback” .36 caliber percussion revolvers, so named because of their distinctive square-backed brass trigger guards. Estimated Price: $200,000 – $325,000, but hey, its a set. (Photos: RIA)
Next up is this exhibition engraved Colt Model 1860 .44 caliber Army Revolver with its matching factory shoulder stock. While the 8-inch barrel is sweet, the stock is what sets the piece off and it has been documented as passing through some of the most esteemed firearms collections in history. Estimated Price: $160,000 – $280,000
One of Colt’s earliest designs, this “D Company” Walker Model 1847 percussion revolver is a beast with its 9-inch partial octagon barrel and tips the scales at over 4-pounds. Just 220 of these guns were marked for D Company of the U.S. Mounted Rifles regiment as part of a 1,000-revolver contract for the military. Estimated Price: $125,000 – $175,000
This .36 caliber Colt Model 1862 was extensively adorned in Germanic scrollwork and a Liberty motif by New York City-based master engraver Louis D. Nimschke, and was probably meant for an officer in the Civil War. Estimated Price: $45,000 – $70,000
This Colt Third Model Hartford London Dragoon is a heavy .44, and has seen some case wear over the years, but is still heavily decorated in gold damascene. Marked SN#529, it is one of just 700 made by Colt for sale in England between 1853 and 1857, around the time of the Crimean War. Estimated Price: $30,000 – $45,000. RIA also has a very similar .36 caliber London Colt Navy up for grabs as well.
How about a tricolor factory engraved Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy with a 4.5-inch barrel and ivory grips? $40,000 – $60,000
This fourth variation Model 1851 Navy revolver includes a California-style holster and features engraving likely done by the famed Gustave Young.
This pair of Wolf & Klar engraved Colt Single Action Army revolvers dates from 1924 and the pearl grips include a carved steer head with ruby red eyes on the right side. $14,000 – $22,500. If you are just looking for one, RIA has a 1929 single for about half the price.
Stamped with “U.S.” marks and a silver-gray patina, this Single Action Army in .45LC includes a rare “Ropes” type flap holster of the type used during the Spanish-American War. If a gun could talk… Estimated Price: $9,500 – $16,000.
Made in 1908, this Colt Bisley Flattop Target Model was shipped to J.P. Lowers & Sons, in Denver, Colorado, on Jan. 27, 1910. It is one of just 98 Flattop Bisley made in .38 WCF and is expected to bring between $7,000 – $9,000.
Besides these old-school guns, there is also a number of snakes such as King Cobras, Pythons and even an Anaconda up for grabs as well.
The auction is set to run Sept. 9-10.
