BOZEMAN, Mont. (Ammoland.Com) – With only three days to fill a limited entry mule deer tag on public lands in Montana, Randy Newberg, Hunter, is taking a gamble in a unit he’s never stepped foot in before. On this week’s Leupold’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg, the brutal November weather is hard on hunter, cameras, and gear, however, the deer don’t seem to mind. Public land wilderness is reason enough to chase deer in Montana; only a special November rut tag can make it any better.

“I’ve never hunted this unit before, so in many respects, its almost like I’m a non-resident hunter here,” said Newberg. “I’ve done my research with Google earth, maps and talking to fellow hunters on the HuntTalk forums, so we’ll see how this very short hunt will turn out.”
On the first day, Newberg spots a nice buck with only two hours of daylight left. He considers pursuing him, but instead watches his patterns as he chases does into a basin. On day two, he’s able to find that same buck, but at more than 400 yards away. “I’ve got to get this done today. It is fun to pick one buck and chase him. It’s just me and him now,” continued Newberg.
The buck continues chasing does along a ridge and can go on either side – one side will take him closer to Newberg, the other side will push him away. With the camera running low on battery power thanks to the below zero temps, Newberg gambles the buck will come to his side of the ridge and starts setting up. Tune in Wednesday night to see if Newberg is able to fulfill his coveted mule deer tag, or if he goes home empty handed.
