Saint Paul, MN -(AmmoLand.com)- The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus today called for additional privacy protections for gun owners to be added to the REAL ID implementation bill, being heard later today on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representatives as SF3589 / HF3959.
“There are many valid privacy concerns for individuals as the State of Minnesota considers whether or not to move towards implementation today – and how to best approach doing so, “ said Bryan Strawser, Executive Director. “Foremost among those concerns for our organization is the need to codify specific privacy protections for gun owners as a part of the final bill.”
Many gun owners are concerned about the data that the State of Minnesota holds today about them as a gun owner – and what would happen with that information if REAL ID is implemented.
“Over the past several days, the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus has worked with Representative Dennis Smith, the Chief Author of the bill in the House, along with Representative Jim Nash to craft language that would provide specific privacy protections for gun owners in this bill,” stated Rob Doar, Political Director.
The proposed amendments, which will be introduced by Representative Smith today, will prohibit the Commissioner of Public Safety from sharing data related to hunter/firearms safety certification, the purchase or transfer of firearms, and applications for permits to carry as collected under MN 171.07, Subd. 13 and MN 624.712 – 624.719 through the REAL ID processes.
“While we remain neutral on the underlying REAL ID implementation bill, we strongly support the two amendments proposed by Rep. Smith, “ added Strawser. “These amendments will ensure that the data about law-abiding gun owners that is currently held by the State of Minnesota will remain completely private and secure. “ added Strawser.
