Killed in World War II at the Battle of Tarawa, Medal of Honor recipient Marine 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman, Jr. is on his way home to Tennessee to be buried next to his parents.
Bonnyman’s actions on Tarawa, during the assault on a Japanese bombproof shelter on D+2, earned the nation’s highest award for valor, posthumously.
His remains, along with others from 2d Battalion, 8th Marines, were brought back from the island earlier this year. After positive identification in Hawaii, the officer was transferred from Borthwick Mortuary in Honolulu on Sept. 24 for his final journey home to Knoxville where he will be laid to rest in his family’s plot.
