A domestic dispute in Stanly County, North Carolina, last month ended with a father dead, shot by his own son, who said he acted in self-defense after the man came at him with a chainsaw.
According to local authorities, Stanley Harwood, 57, got into an argument with his wife, but the couple’s 20-year-old son, Seth, interceded. However, the altercation only escalated when the son stepped in, and at some point, the elder Harwood retrieved a chainsaw.
“From evidence we have, the chainsaw had been started and was running,” explained Stanly County Sheriff George Burris.
As the father came at the son, Seth, who had already armed himself with a gun, shot his father, who later died, despite efforts by first responders to save him.
No charges were filed against Seth.
“I would’ve never thought something that awful would’ve happened,” one neighbor told reporters.
