Philadelphia police are searching for a man who left a 3-year-old child and a loaded handgun behind in a car as he fled from authorities following a traffic stop.
Police say the stop was initiated because the vehicle’s license plate was partially covered, but instead of stopping, the driver sped away and led authorities on a chase before bailing from the car and continuing the pursuit on foot.
Police never caught up with the suspect, but upon returning to the man’s car, discovered a small child and a handgun loaded with 11 rounds, including one in the chamber.
Authorities determined that the car belongs to the suspect’s girlfriend, the mother of the child, whom the man was apparently on his way to pick up from work when the officer initiated the traffic stop.
Authorities have not yet determined the man’s identity and the girlfriend is said to not be cooperating with the police.
“The person who did this – he knows who he is. The family knows who he is, girlfriend knows who he is,” said Lt. Johnnie Walker with the Philadelphia Police. “He needs to be responsible and do the right thing and take accountability for his actions.”
