A young man was shot and killed Saturday night at a popular park in San Francisco while playing Pokemon Go with a friend, and now investigators are working to determine what happened.
Twenty-year-old Calvin Riley was playing the game with a friend from out of town in Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square just before 10 p.m. The friend told police he was just around the corner from Riley, a few feet away, when he heard gunshots. When the friend came back, he found Riley lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Riley died as a result of his injuries despite efforts to save him.
No arrests have been made and there are no obvious motives in the shooting. Authorities say they believe it was a “random act of violence.”
Riley, who lived in San Mateo, was a baseball player at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
Reed Peters, the Delta College baseball coach, gave the following statement to local media.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our delta baseball family, Calvin Riley. Calvin was loved by all those that knew him. He was a great person from a great family. A 20 year old with his best years ahead of him. He was a huge part of our team reaching the 2016 final four. He was a fun loving teammate that players loved to be around. Once he took the mound he was all business. He possessed a great arm, great curveball, and a bulldog mentality that you loved to have with the game on the line. He brought the best out in all of us. He will be truly missed but never forgotten. RIP 27.
A Go Fund Me account has been created to help Riley’s family pay for funeral expenses.
