Thomas Gilbert, Jr., 30, is facing murder charges after he allegedly shot his father, a multi-millionaire hedge-fund founder, over a dispute about money. Gilbert’s father apparently cut his son’s weekly allowance and threatened to stop paying for his posh Manhattan apartment before the deadly confrontation.
After shooting his father in the head with a .40-caliber Glock 22 handgun Sunday afternoon, Gilbert was believed to have staged the scene to make it appear as if the shooting was a suicide. Gilbert’s mother discovered her husband’s lifeless body just minutes after he was shot, and authorities were not fooled by the suicide staging.
Family and friends are shocked by the events.
“I can’t believe a son would do this,” said Charlie Suk, owner of a cleaners which Gilbert, Sr. often patronized. “How can a son kill his father?”
Suk said Gilbert, Sr. “was a good person.”
