Maine woman sentenced two years for buying guns for crack

A woman in Bangor, Maine, has been sentenced to two years in prison and three years of supervised released on June 12 for buying guns in exchange for crack, according to reports.

Maureen Alice Hammond, 51, was found guilty of conspiring to make a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, something she confessed to in June 2013, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Hammond bought three handguns in two transactions at Jimi’s Trading Center in Brewer, Maine, on Oct. 9, 2012. During the sale, she claimed to be the actual buyer, when, in fact, she was buying it for a drug dealer and paying with money he had given her.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Hammond gave the guns to the dealer, who was not named in court documents, and was given crack cocaine as payment for the transaction. The guns have never been recovered.

A U.S. District judge ordered Hammond to begin serving her sentence on Aug. 15.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
