Magnum Research, part of Kahr Arms, will be launching a new 1911 pistol at SHOT Show next week, the DE1911U. The “U” stands for “Undercover” which fits the bill nicely; the DE1911U is a compact carry 1911 with a scant three-inch barrel that expands on their catalog of Desert Eagle-branded pistols nicely.
The company has had full-size five-inch 1911s and compact 4.33-inch 1911s for some time now, but this is their first true sub-compact.
While traditionally manufacturers have had issues developing super-compact .45 ACP 1911s, Magnum research has confidence in their design and they should. It uses a proven bushingless bull barrel and full-length guide rod system that has made these little guns possible.
In addition to the accuracy-enhancing bull barrel, the DE1911U has an 11-degree target crown. The pistol also features fully-adjustable target sights.
That being said this is a gun for concealed-carry. While the slide is machined from 4140 steel the frame is made from a lightweight aluminum alloy to reduce the gun’s heft. Unloaded the gun weighs just a hair under 26 ounces making it light enough for just about any type of carry. Other dimensions are that it has an overall length of just under seven inches, a height of five inches and a width of about 1.3 inches at the controls.
In addition to the construction quality gun owners have come to expect from Magnum Research and their Desert Eagle series pistols, the DE1911U has a couple of nice finishing touches that make it a classy carry pistol, too.
It has a skeletonized hammer and trigger, an extended magazine and thumb safety, an extended beavertail safety with a memory button, a finely-checkered frontstrap, a matching checkered aluminum backstrap, a stainless steel full-length guide rod and double-diamond checkered hardwood grips.
And one last touch, it comes with two six-round magazines for a total of 13 rounds of .45 ACP at the shooter’s disposal, out of the box.
There are some people who believe people shouldn’t carry anything other than .45 1911s and others who believe people shouldn’t carry anything but single-stack subcompacts. With the DE1911U, you can have both.
