USA – -(Ammoland.com)- The Hunt: Part I.
This week on Long Range Pursuit TV, Mike and Aaron continue the Idaho hunt with their friend Wes from Heaven’s Gate Outfitters.
The weather is starting to look a little more threatening, but they’re going to tough it out and see if they can get a buck for Aaron.
After circling to investigate a drainage, Mike spots a nice-sized buck. After further investigation, Aaron and Mike decide to hold off for something a little bit bigger.
Long Range Out of the Box
Today, on Long Range Out of the Box, we take you through the process of manufacturing a Gunwerks action — from stainless steel blank to the finished product, ready for final assembly.
There are 12 basic steps to the manufacturing process of a Gunwerks LR action. This process has been engineered to produce true and concentric surfaces that enhance the accuracy of the Gunwerks Shooting System.
The Hunt: Part II
The second part of the hunt begins with an early-morning hike. Aaron spots two does at first light, so we decide to wait to see if the buck shows up. As the snow begins to fall, we decide to push toward the visible deer to see if we come up on the buck, rather than stay in one place.
Long Range Shooting Tip
In this segment, we talk about a few of the advantages of bringing along a spotter. Mike goes into a bit more detail about each advantage, but they are (in the order that Mike lays them out):
- Most of the time, the weapon’s recoil prevents the shooter from seeing the impact
- Information relayed by the spotter is critical to making a precise, long-range shot
- Spotter can better determine the ideal time to take a shot
- Spotter can monitor conditions in real time while the shooter is focused on the target
- Spotter can observe and confirm the shot, also give direction of a miss
The Hunt: Part III
While sighting in our target buck, Mike spots an even bigger buck closer in. As we reposition to target the larger animal, it moved out of sight and the fog rolled in, obscuring the view.
DIY
For long-range shooting, you need to get the most performance possible from your ammunition. Because of this, we use high-BC VLD (Very Low Drag) bullets. These bullets perform best when they fire close to or touching the lands. Ideally, we want the bullet 15- to 25-thousandths from touching the lands.
In order to configure our ammunition properly, we need to precisely measure the chamber from the lands to the face of the bolt. In this segment, Aaron will show you how to make this measurement to squeeze the maximum possible performance from your long-range hunting ammunition.
Long Range Ballistics
In our Long Range Ballistics segment, we discuss the physics involved in Bullet Penetration and Shoulder Stabilization. Because the medium that the bullet enters upon impact is much more dense than air, the bullet cannot continue to spin to maintain the proper forward orientation. Fortunately, bullets are designed to mushroom upon impact. Shoulder stabilization is made possible by a combination of the forces on the front of the mushroomed bullet and the balance of the forces caused by tissue moving past the body of the bullet.
The Hunt: Part IV
In the final segment of our Idaho Public Lands hunt, Aaron and Mike scramble onto an acceptable but uncomfortable platform to take a long-range shot at the large buck they were tracking earlier. Aaron takes the shot at 470 yards and scores a kill!
