USA – -(Ammoland.com)- In this episode of Long Range Pursuit TV we’re following along on a 5-day hunt in the Idaho backcountry. We’re excited to meet up with our buddy Wes from Heaven’s Gate Outfitters. We were heading straight into a heavy storm, but we weren’t going to let that stop us!
We were excited to see some mule deer on our first day out — two bucks. We decide to hold off. After all, we’re just getting started on this trip.
In part one, Mike’s luck on big bucks holds true–so does the shot! Learn how to mount a scope in the DIY segment.
Dry firing can reduce flinching summarizes the Long Range Shooting Tip and if you have ever wanted to understand spin drift, don’t miss this weeks Long Range Ballistics Segment.
Segment 2: Long Range Shooting Tip ~ Training with Dry-Firing
In our Long Range Shooting Tip segment, we talk about dry-firing as a training technique. When there’s an animal in your scope, your heart-rate picks up and your adrenaline starts really pumping. This makes it tough to slowly work through a list of pre-shot steps. With training, you’ll learn to perform these pre-shot steps sub-consciously — you won’t even know that you’re doing them. That’s less that you have to concentrate on at the critical moment, and that will make it easier to hit your target.
The three dry-fire training techniques we cover in this segment are:
- 1) Learning to shoot off of gear
- 2) Learning your rifle’s trigger
- 3) Learning follow-through
Segment 3: DIY Tip ~ How to Execute the proper scope mount
Understandably, some guys find the scope mount to be a little intimidating. That’s understandable — you’re working with some expensive equipment. With the right tools and a little training, however, it’s a pretty simple process.
1) The first thing you’ll need is a torque wrench. This tool will get your mount screws set to the proper torque so you won’t strip them and they won’t work their way back out. Remember to lube the threads before mounting your rings.
2) Once the rings and bases are mounted, you’ll use a lapping bar and lapping compound until you achieve 75% or more contact on the bottom half of the ring and the scope tube. This will prevent the scope from getting pinched when you tighten the top set of rings.
3) Place the scope and the upper rings and, using locking agent, secure with the mounting screws. Just snug up the screws — you still need to position the scope for level and eye relief.
4) The last thing you’ll need to do is level the reticle with the center line of the bore. There are several ways to do this. Basically, if there’s a flat spot on the action, you’ll want to level that. Then when you mount your rings and your scope, you’ll level off the top of the scope.
If you still need the tools, Wheeler sells a handy kit that includes the torque wrench, the lapping bar, the leveling tools, and the locking agent. It’s all-in-one kit and you’re ready to go!
Segment 4: The Hunt, Part II ~ Day Two:
We spotted a nice buck the evening of the first day, so we woke up this morning with that buck in mind. The day was cool and clear – some of our favorite weather for a hunt.
After circling the timber, we spotted the buck in a stand with a few doe. We decided to climb a bit to a better vantage point. The deer were still grazing in the same area, so Mike set up his shot. It was a perfect shot at 500 yards. Mike’s luck held out — it was a great trip and a great couple of days in the backcountry!
