Lincoln Neb Hunter Bags Bighorn Sheep
LINCOLN, Neb. –-(AmmoLand.com)- TA Nebraska bighorn sheep was harvested by Brent Bollwitt of Lincoln on Dec. 8 near Fort Robinson State Park. The full-curl ram was approximately 9 years old.
Bollwitt was guided by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Wildlife Division staff from Alliance. Bollwitt was a guest at Fort Robinson during the hunt. The hunting party observed 15-20 sheep.
Fifteen bighorn rams have been harvested in Nebraska over the past 11 years. Bighorns were reintroduced to the state in 1981. Approximately 275 bighorns now live in the Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills in Nebraska’s Panhandle.
Nearly $700,000 has been generated from the sale of auction and lottery permits for the Bighorn Sheep Program in Nebraska since 1998. These funds have been used for the benefit and reintroduction of bighorns throughout the Panhandle.
No bighorn sheep season is scheduled for 2010, due to a small number of younger rams recruiting into the population.
Bollwitt harvested the second bighorn this year. John Marsh, a Kansas hunter, took an 11-year-old ram on Dec. 1 near Fort Robinson.
The net green score on the Marsh ram is 178 7/8. The Bollwitt ram is approximately 175.
