A new program in Portland, Oregon called “Felons and Kids with Guns” promises to fork over a $250 cash reward to tipsters who dime out either a felon or a juvenile in possession of a firearm.
The program is run by Crimestoppers of Oregon in conjunction with the Portland Police Bureau and was debuted Tuesday. Under its guidelines, to qualify for a reward the tip has to lead into an arrest and seizure of a gun from either a felon or a youth under 18. The reward money would come from donated, not public, funds.
“Crime Stoppers of Oregon is committed to reducing gun violence and helping law enforcement agencies throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington solve felony crimes,” reads a statement posted on the Portland Police website.
Oregon state law generally prohibits firearm possession by minors unless it is a longarm such as a rifle or shotgun that has been legally transferred to the youth with parental consent and for temporary use hunting and target practice.
Crimestoppers allows tips via its website or handy mobile aps.
