Hundreds of people gathered at a Confederate flag rally in Stone Mountain, Georgia, over the weekend had a simple message: “It’s heritage, not hate.” But when one open and unapologetic member of the Ku Klux Klan showed up, he was run off by flag supporters yelling, “Go away, KKK.”
The man left the rally, but soon thereafter tensions flared once again when anti-flag protesters attempted to get a rise from rally-goers.
All in all, the rally remained peaceful for the most part, which was the goal. Event organizers were adamant that no racial slurs or violence would be tolerated.
Nick Stewart came to the rally unsure of what it would be like.
“I was almost expecting to see a lot of white sheets but it hasn’t been like that at all,” Stewart said. “They say it’s about heritage – not hate. It’s been peaceful.”
