I finally got my hands on a Keltec SUB-2000 Gen. 2 in 9mm. It takes Glock magazines. I wanted this gun for a long time. I sold a rifle recently and the guy that bought it offered me some cash plus the Keltec. I couldn’t refuse. I’ve had it for about a month now and I’ve put approximately 400 rounds through it.
The SUB-2000 is light and handles well. It’s a fun little gun to shoot. I installed a Leapers UTG AR-15 Foregrip Foldable Five Position grip on it thinking it would make it more ergonomic to shoot. However, I’m going to take it off because it wiggles and the ergonomics are better without it.
I’m not a fan of the “iron” sights that come with the gun. It’s not that they’re bad, it’s that it’s hard to get on target fast with them. So I mounted my Trijicon MRO, which is of course way better. The MRO is a fantastic optic. I can get on target super fast and I can hit a torso-sized target handheld consistently out to 100 yards and beyond.
Of course, this means I can’t fold the gun in half which is a big selling point of this gun. However, I don’t plan on putting it a backpack or concealing it like that, so it’s not a big deal.
I’m not a huge fan of the trigger. It’s ok. It’s a bit squishy, and it’s hard to shoot fast. The safety is in a weird place too. I have to take my hand off the grip to activate it.
Mag release is good. No complaints there. I’ve been running a Glock and two Magpul magazines and they work fine.
I have had an issue of the rubber grip getting caught up in the mag as I slide it in. It’s pretty annoying. I yanked up the rubber to get it out of the way, and it stays up for a while, but it slowly works it’s way back down. A detail, but still annoying.
The charging handle is good. I find it easier to charge the gun with my right hand rather than my left. Perhaps it’s because I’m right handed. The spring is a little bit stiff, but it works well.
I’ve had two stovepipe style jams out of 400 rounds. I was told by the previous owner to shoot heavier grained ammo to make the gun cycle better. So I’m shooting 147 grain X Metal Target ammo. It’s supposed to be very good ammo, so I’m not sure why I got those two jams.
I also get my beard caught in the stock where the plastic parts meet the metal. It’s absolutely horrible when it yanks out my facial hair.
Other than these issues, the gun is a lot of fun to shoot, it’s accurate and it looks really neat. I wouldn’t necessarily take this gun into battle with me but there aren’t too many battles on the horizon, and I have other guns for that.
For $600, it’s hard to go wrong with the Keltec SUB-2000 Gen. 2. I’ve always been a fan of Keltec and this gun demonstrates why they’re such an interesting company.
