Kansas lawmakers advanced a bill Thursday to ban concealed guns from hospitals, mental health centers and nursing homes.
The Associated Press reported that the Senate Ways and Means Committee approved the proposal, which would exempt the facilities from a law that would require the buildings to allow guns starting July 1 unless they install metal detectors and post security guards at entrances.
The committee’s approval now sends the bill to the Senate floor for consideration.
Last month, Gov. Sam Brownback asked for over $24 million in a proposed budget to install extra security measures and hire guards at state psychiatric hospitals, so that the facilities could prohibit firearms.
