Former baseball player Jose Canseco underwent surgery in an attempt to save his middle finger after he accidentally shot it off Tuesday afternoon in his Las Vegas home.
According to his fiancée, Leila Knight, who was there when the accident occurred, Canseco was sitting at the kitchen table cleaning a .45-caliber handgun when it accidentally discharged. Canseco apparently thought the firearm wasn’t loaded when he began cleaning it, Knight indicated.
“I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string,” Knight said, adding that the finger would either be amputated or Canseco would have to undergo full reconstructive surgery.
Knight confirmed that Canseco was “ok” just after midnight, although there’s no word currently on the condition of his finger.
