An internal affairs investigation has been launched after a loaded gun was found inside a holding cell at a jail in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, last month.
“It would have been a catastrophe if someone got ahold of the gun and started firing inside the station,” said Mayor Tony George, who is also the former police chief.
George points to a lack of proper pat-downs for the mistake.
Authorities believe they know who brought the handgun into the holding cell. However, the gun, which was loaded with nine bullets, wasn’t even discovered until days after that man was released.
The incident continues to be under investigation, but there’s no word of when that investigation is expected to be completed or any possible disciplinary actions that may result.
