Twenty inmates and three correctional officers were injured in a fight that broke out Tuesday at the Cook County Jail in Chicago.
The fight erupted in Division 9, the maximum security section of the jail used to house the most violent inmates. Authorities aren’t sure what spurred the brawl, but the entire thing was caught on surveillance video.
Inmates exchanged words before one started to remove his shirt and punches were thrown. Others jumped in within seconds, and while the fighting stopped momentarily, it started right back up again and only escalated as a group of correctional officers come on the scene.
Eight inmates and three deputies were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. All are expected to be okay.
“We are investigating the situation now to better determine the root cause of it and to determine how we can minimize it from happening again,” said Dr.Nneka Jones-Tapia with the Cook County Department of Corrections.
