Residents in a historic Fort Wayne, Indiana, neighborhood are at odds over a Donald Trump dummy hanging from a noose that appeared in one man’s front yard after the president’s inauguration.
The homeowner refused to talk to reporters but residents say he is an Army veteran and signs in his windows appear to indicate such, including one that reads, “Trump is a disgrace to America & makes me ashamed I ever served.”
Jared Paden, who lives in the neighborhood, called the effigy “shocking” and “disrespectful” and while he doesn’t like it and wishes the man would take it down, he also recognized that the act is protected by free speech.
However, Oakdale Neighborhood President Tom Tiernon said they are having a home tour in June and wants the doll removed.
“We’re all for free speech, but we are concerned that a line has been crossed and about what to do next,” Tiernon said in a statement.
But Officer Michael Joyner, spokesman for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said there’s nothing they can do about the situation, as the homeowner is within his right to free speech.
An informal poll conducted on a local news website shows people are split almost exactly down the middle on the matter. Out of just over 1,600 votes, a little over half, 51 percent, say the man should not be allowed to hang the doll in his yard, while nearly 46 percent say he should and another three percent chose “other” in the survey.
