This week the Indonesian government spectacularly blew up 38 mostly foreign vessels caught fishing illegally, making a total of 79 sunk in the past four months.
Those sunk this week were primarily from the Western Pacific neighbors Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia and were in celebration of Indonesia’s 70th Independence Day from the Netherlands on Aug. 18. The scuttled ships will become reefs for increased marine habitat.
Indonesia’s Minister for Maritime and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, said its all about enforcing maritime sovereignty.
A larger number of ships, 41 all told, were spectacularly demolished in May as a warning against illegal fishing in its waters, as seen in this video.
