A Georgia homeowner shot and killed a man who broke into his Augusta home early Monday morning.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the perpetrator, 40-year-old Anthony James Lawson began kicking the front door just before 4 a.m., prompting the homeowner, 69-year-old Joseph Patterson, to arm himself with a handgun and call the police.
But as Patterson waited for police to arrive, Lawson, unable to kick in the door, removed an air-conditioning unit from a window to gain entry into the home. Once the intruder was inside, Patterson pulled the trigger, striking Lawson.
When authorities arrived, they found Lawson inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richmond County Coroner. Records show Lawson was previously convicted of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person.
Patterson is not facing charges.
