A man who struck a bicyclist on an Albuquerque highway Friday morning tried to flee the scene when an armed citizen intervened and held him at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
Police say the driver hit the cyclist and tried to leave with the bicycle still stuck beneath his SUV, but one witness followed the man and somehow managed to get him out of his vehicle about a mile from where the accident occurred.
Authorities did not disclose how they believe the confrontation between the driver and armed citizen went down, but another witness captured the intense moments on video as the driver pleaded with the man not to shoot him as he apologized for striking the cyclist. However, the armed citizen’s message was simple: I’m not here to hurt you, but you’re not going anywhere.
Police arrived a short time later and the driver was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a revoked license.
The unidentified armed citizen was released and the bicyclist is expected to be okay.
