A longtime teacher at Lithia Springs High School in Douglas County, Georgia, shot himself in the head while inside his classroom Thursday morning.
Jonathan Freeman survived the shooting and, as of Monday, remained hospitalized in stable condition.
The shooting happened just after 7 a.m. and Freeman, who had worked for the school for nearly 20 years, then stumbled to the classroom of a colleague, who called 911.
“It is not believed that there was any intention to hurt anyone else other than himself,” Douglas County Sheriff Sgt. Jesse Hambrick said of Freeman.
No students were present at the time of the shooting.
Hambrick said there was only a single bullet loaded into the gun and, without going into detail, made it clear that the attempted suicide was due to personal matters and had nothing to do with any staff or students at the school.
Firearms are prohibited at the school and it’s unclear whether Freeman will face any charges. Hambrick said at this point, “The ethical thing to do is to let him focus on the healing process.”
