Video captured by a bystander shows the moment two Salinas police officers fatally shot a man armed with garden shears Tuesday.
Carlos Mejia, 44, was trying to break into a home off Elkington Avenue and was threatening to kill the residents. When police responded to the scene, they found Mejia walking down the street, clutching garden shears in his hands. Mejia swung the shears at one of the officers, and that’s when they opened fire, CBS affiliate reports.
The officers repeatedly commanded Mejia to put the shears down, and he repeatedly refused. Both officers first deployed their Tasers, but one of them misfired, and the other missed its mark.
Salinas Police Chief Kelly McMillin said Majia was approaching the entrance to a bakery and the officers chose to use deadly force to prevent Majia from possibly injuring anyone inside.
The police department has yet to release the names of the officers involved in the shooting, but they have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.
