A pair of Ohio grandmothers who were robbed several years ago decided they were never going to be victims again.
After Konnie Couch, 52, and Robin Willoughby, 57, were robbed in 2011, they started a local carry group in Aurora called Women Armed and Ready, or WAR. Couch and Willoughby spent over two years developing their idea and on May 6, they had their first meeting, Cincinnati reports.
WAR has three main objectives: education, training and competence. Couch and Willoughby want other women to be prepared for the worst case scenario and believe firearms training is the answer.
“The thing of it is, bad things happen to good people all the time, and, if something bad is going to happen, it’s going to happen without warning,” Couch said. “It’s going to be very quick, and you’ve got to be prepared for it.”
“[Our main objective is] to get women trained and where, if they have to… they would be able to react and save themselves,” Couch added. “Or at least make a very valiant attempt to save themselves.”
WAR currently has 35 registered members consisting of women between the ages of 50 and 81 who meet twice a month. The women have been focusing primarily on stationary shooting, but hope to advance to tactical shooting with moving targets when the time is right.
“I don’t want you to be confident in what you do,” Couch told WAR members during a July 8 meeting. “When you’re confident, you’re careless. I want you to be competent.”
“Just because you carry a gun doesn’t make you Annie Oakley,” Couch continued. “If you draw a firearm, there is a chance you are going to kill somebody.”
Many of the WAR members come from a background of abuse and joined to overcome their fear of firearms, while others are there because they refuse to be victims.
