A group of good Samaritans stopped to help a New York state trooper in need on a busy Long Island highway Wednesday afternoon and one witness’ cell phone video captured the bloodied cop as he struggled with the fighting suspect.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop around 3 p.m. but as the officer was at the window, the suspect sped away with the trooper hanging from his window.
“He floored his car, you know the cruiser was right behind the suspect’s car, and he literally just floored it with the cop hanging out, you literally see the cop’s legs hanging out outside the vehicle,” said a witness who did not wish to be identified.
Eventually, the Honda Accord crashed into the center median and soon thereafter passersby took notice – and video.
Within seconds of the crash, a woman scrambled to get out of the front passenger’s seat, then moments later, both the suspect and the trooper emerged from the car. The trooper’s face was covered in blood from what appeared to be a wound above his right eye. The suspect continued to violently fight the trooper with no signs of slowing down.
About half a dozen men ended up stopping and running over to help the trooper restrain the suspect. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault upon a police officer, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.
The trooper was taken to the hospital to be treated for head injuries.
“It was like a movie,” the witness said. “It was right in front of your face and you don’t even believe it’s happening.”
