Wayne LaPierre may say the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, but that certainly wasn’t the case when a good Samaritan — armed only with a motorcycle helmet — intervened after seeing two teens assaulted by a man with a gun in Salem, Oregon, Sunday afternoon.
Two teens were crossing a busy street when they walked out in front of 59-year-old Edward West’s truck. West apparently yelled at the boys to get out of the street and the boys yelled back.
West then pulled into a nearby parking lot, got out of his truck and initiated an altercation with the boys, that turned physical when he slapped one of them. The incident further escalated when West went back to his truck, retrieved a handgun, and said, “Get ready to die.”
But a man passing by on a motorcycle had witnessed the incident and decided to intervene when West pulled out the gun. The good Samaritan, who has not been identified, used the only thing he had on hand – a motorcycle helmet – to knock the gun out of West’s hand, giving the teens a chance to seek safety.
West was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and fourth-degree assault.
