A Georgia man fatally shot one of two intruders during a home invasion late Tuesday.
The Marietta homeowner heard banging on his door around 11 p.m. and moments later, two men came barging into his residence, one of them screaming. The homeowner shot one of the suspects, Michael Verucci, 30, and watched as the other one fled in a vehicle that was waiting outside, Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
“When they arrived, they met with the homeowner who told them he had just shot an intruder inside his home,” Cobb Police Spokesman Mike Bowman said in an emailed statement. “In addition, the homeowner told investigators that he saw a second suspect leave the area in a vehicle.”
The homeowner said detectives questioned him for several hours, but that he was later released.
Officer Bowman said they don’t expect any charges to be filed against the homeowner.
Just several hours later, another shooting happened in Marietta – this time at a house party.
There were nearly 60 party guests at the Dwell apartment complex Tuesday night when a group of four to five unwanted guests showed up. An argument ensued and shots were fired, WSB-TV reports.
According to the Marietta Daily Journal, one of the unwanted guests pulled a gun and opened fire into the crowd.
Three party-goers were shot. One of the victims, Christopher Wilson, 19, was transported to Kennestone Hospital via ambulance, where he later died. The other two victims, Chauncey Martin, 19, and Malik Philips, 18, were driven to the hospital by friends.
The shooter fled and remains at large. Detectives interviewed the party guests to compile a description of the suspect, but Marietta Police Department Spokesman Officer David Baldwin said the description could not be released to the public.
Officer Bowman said there was no evidence to suggest the two shootings were connected, but said the lines of communication between agencies remains open.
