As the trial got underway for Matthew Apperson, the man who shot at George Zimmerman during a road rage incident in Lake Mary, Florida, last year, the defense drilled Zimmerman on a number of items, including his thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement, who he referred to as terrorist cowards.
Apperson claims he fired at Zimmerman in self-defense after Zimmerman first pulled a gun on him, which Zimmerman denies. But on Wednesday, defense attorney Michael LaFay focused on Zimmerman’s past actions, particularly as they relate to the Trayvon Martin shooting, which he made repeated and blatant references.
“You didn’t shoot at Apperson because he had a pistol and not a bag of Skittles?” LaFay asked Zimmerman at one point, a query in reference to the fact that Martin carried a bag of Skittles during the deadly 2012 encounter.
Zimmerman was acquitted of murder for the fatal shooting of Martin, something which the defense seemed to be more focused on than the actual self-defense claim made by Apperson.
Of course, Apperson came into play after Zimmerman auctioned off the gun he used to kill Martin for a hefty $250,000. In the auction posting, Zimmerman referred to Apperson as a “BLM sympathizer.” Naturally, the defense questioned Zimmerman about this and asked whether he believed Apperson was part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Zimmerman responded with, “They are terrorists… it’s not a movement. I see them as terrorists.”
Then, just in case there was any question, Zimmerman reiterated his opinion, again calling the Black Lives Matter movement “terrorist cowards.”
Meanwhile, Zimmerman’s trial ended three years ago, but Apperson is facing charges for attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, which essentially has nothing to do with either the Martin case or the Black Lives Matter movement.
