A new pro-gun control ad by former Democratic congresswoman Gabby Giffords is set to air immediately before and after President Obama’s State of the Union address tonight.
Before the president addresses the nation at 9 p.m. eastern, Giffords will have approximately 30 seconds of air time to convince America to support background checks, Huffington Post reports.
“What is Congress afraid of? Nine out of 10 Americans support background checks,” says Giffords, who survived a failed assassination attempt on her life in 2011. “They make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to get guns. Congress is afraid of the gun lobby. Tell Washington it’s too dangerous to wait.”
The ad will bracket the president’s speech, but is part of a larger, national campaign with hopes to influence the gun control debate. However, the president is not expected to address gun control issues tonight.
