For the past year, a military unit in France has trained golden eagles from chicks to adult to be single-purpose drone assassins.
As noted in the above Euronews video, the birds were introduced to the remote control hobby copters at an early age and trained to view them as prey. Once they snatch the copter out of the sky and bring it back, they pick up their reward of fresh meat.
Agence France-Presse reports the four eagles are named d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis and can cover 200 meters in about 20 seconds.
“The results are encouraging. The eagles are making good progress,” said Commander Christophe, who heads the air safety squadron that is training the military working birds.
It’s not the first effort to train eagles to go on the offensive against drones. The Dutch national police have been working on a similar program.
And apparently, eagles just friggen hate the things anyway as witnessed from the below video from Australia in 2015.
