Former USAMU Soldier, Reservist to be inducted into International Hall of Fame
FORT BENNING, Ga. – -(AmmoLand.com)- Former U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Staff Sgt. Daniel T. Carlisle and retired U.S. Army Reservist Sgt. 1st Class Ruby E. Fox will be inducted into the 2008 U.S. International Shooting Hall of Fame, USA Shooting announced Nov. 20 from the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Carlisle of Austin, Texas, is one of the most successful shotgun shooters in history. Carlisle started shooting American Trap competitively at the age of 14. In 1975, at the age of 18, Carlisle joined the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and later that same year won the Pan-American Games.
In 1977, Carlisle left the Army for the Army Reserves and continued competitive shooting with the Reserve Team until returning to active duty with the Marksmanship Unit in 1981. Under the instruction of U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Shotgun Coach Burl Branham until he was discharged in 1985, Carlisle won numerous international championships.
He was a member of two Olympic teams, claiming the Bronze Medal in Men’s Trap at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. At the Seoul, Korea, Games of 1988, Carlisle competed in both the Trap and Skeet events, where he finished fourth in Skeet and ninth in Trap. Carlisle was within a trigger pull in 1988 of placing an Olympic medal in Skeet next to his 1984 Olympic medal in Trap.
Carlisle was a World Champion in Skeet in 1982 and also won an individual Silver Medal, five team Gold Medals and one team Bronze Medal in World Championships during his career. He was a seven-time Pan-American Gold Medalist, winning three individual titles as well as four team Gold Medals. He was also a team Gold Medalist at the Championship of the Americas as well as an individual World Cup SilverMedalist.
He won 14 Gold, two Silver and two Bronze medals in international shooting events. He set three individual and four team world records during his tenure as an internationally competitive shotgun shooter. Today, Carlisle is a nationally recognized shooting instructor and coach and was the long-time coach of 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Sgt. Walton Glenn Eller III of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit before Eller joined the Army.
A native of Parker, Ariz., Fox was one of the nation’s leading pistol shooters and the foremost female pistol champion. During her international shooting career, which spanned from 1974 to 1992, Fox earned a total of nine Gold, four Silver and four Bronze medals in international events.
She is the only woman pistol competitor in the USA to win an Olympic Medal, claiming the Silver in Sport Pistol at the 1984 Games in Los Angles, and to win an Air Pistol World Championship in Korea in 1979 and claim a Gold Medal in Sport Pistol at the 1987 Pan-American Games along with setting a new Pan-Am Record.
Fox was a member of the 1988 Olympic team, where she finished 22nd in Air Pistol and 26th in Sport Pistol. She also won two Pan-American team Gold Medals, one team Silver and three team Bronze at the World Championships and claimed six medals at the Championship of the Americas, including an individual Gold.
Until her retirement, Fox was the only woman on the elite U.S. Army Reserve Pistol Team. She lives with her husband Art and said she enjoys traveling and the quiet home life. She competes in the Sportsman’s Team Challenge for and is a consultant with Smith and Wesson. She instructs the National Shooting Sports Foundation “First Shot Program” as well as the NRA’s Ladies on Target and Refuse to Be a Victim program.
Carlisle and Fox will be presented with a bronze plaque during the U.S. International Shooting Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Jan. 16 at the 2009 SHOT Show in Orlando, Fla. The USA Shooting Board of Directors and the current International Shooting Hall of Fame members vote on the Hall of Fame inductees every four years following the Olympic Games.
