Former cop suing gun shop after he accidentally shoots himself (VIDEO)

A former Glasgow, Kentucky, police officer filed a lawsuit Friday against a local gun shop where he accidentally shot off part of his finger while looking at one of the store’s guns.

Surveillance video shows Darrell Smith, dressed in his uniform and standing at the gun counter at Barren Outdoors. Smith asked the employee to see a show him a .380-caliber handgun from the display case. But Smith didn’t know the handgun was loaded, nor was he observing safety precautions as he cocked it and squeezed the trigger while his other hand was at the end of the barrel.

Smith shot off a portion of his index finger, and has since lost his job.

“He’s permanently disfigured,” Smith’s lawyer, Alan Simpson, said. “He went through a lot of pain and suffering. He’s gone through several surgeries. He’s got a lot of medical bills that have to be paid. It ended his career and he’s going to have a lot of lost income.”

However, co-owner of Barren Outdoors, Todd Logsdon, doesn’t seem too concerned about the lawsuit.

“I will say this – the whole incident is on video, so it should be easy for the court to reach a conclusion about the liability,” Logsdon said.
