Following Trump victory, Californians call for secession

Calexit

The day after the United States presidential election, #Calexit was trending on social media, as hundreds gathered on the capital steps.

Apparently, there is a large number of Californians who weren’t happy with the election results and are now calling for the state to secede. But the idea – although gaining momentum following the election – isn’t new and actually has a fairly good following.

Yes California Independence Campaign is the group pushing for the change, aiming for a referendum in 2018 which, if passed, would make the state of California an independent country.

Shervin Pishevar, an early investor in Uber, previously said he would provide the funds to make California its own country if Trump was elected president. After the official announcement of a win, Pishevar again confirmed he was willing to provide the financial support needed.

“It’s the most patriotic thing I can do,” he said, adding that the country is at a “crossroads… a tipping point.”
