The friend of a gunman who killed nine people in a South Carolina church in June was indicted Friday for withholding information and lying to investigators, saying he didn’t know the act would be carried out, officials announced.

Joseph Carlton Meek, 21, is being charged with misprison of a felony and making false statements when he told investigators that his friend, 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof never told him about the shooting he intended to carry out at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, on June 17, the Justice Department said.

The indictment charges that Meek took deliberate steps to conceal his knowledge of the crime before talking with a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
