After being closed for nearly six weeks and with their son finally on the mend, a California family reopened their Victorville cupcake shop Monday for the first time since the San Bernardino shooting last month.
Hilario “Larry” Venoya, 28, was one of the 22 people who were injured during what was determined to be a terrorist attack that left 14 dead at a holiday party. Venova’s parents, Hilario Venoya Jr. and Margarita Venoya, own M Cupcakes n Pastries, but the sweet shop has been closed for over a month, patrons left with a note on the door explaining that Dec. 2 was one of the worst days of the owners’ lives.
“As parents we try to protect our children from any harm so they can be safe every day,” the note read. “Our son was one of the victims in the San Bernardino shooting. We are thankful he is still here but is currently injured and still has a long road to recovery. As a business owner we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused but because of the circumstance we have temporarily (closed) the shop. … As parents, I hope you understand the decision we have made.”
With the doors to the bakery closed, the couple focused on their son’s recovery, and although he still has a long road ahead of him, the younger Hilario, who was shot in the leg and back, is doing much better.
“I told myself yesterday that I wasn’t going to open the shop today, but my son said he wanted me to reopen the store on Monday,” said Margarita Venoya, who has owned the shop for five years.
Venoya said it wasn’t until the night before they were set to reopen that they became overwhelmed with the thought of it. But they pushed on and opened up anyway, with troves of faithful patrons stopping by to fill up on the shop’s sweet treats.
Doctors said Venova should make a full recover, but he will not have the use of his legs for at least another three months.
