The widow and the sister of two fallen soldiers said they were assaulted and berated while on their way to an inaugural ball honoring military families Friday.
Amy Looney, whose husband Navy SEAL Lt. Brendan Looney died in 2010, and Ryan Manion, whose brother Marine First Lt. Travis Manion died in 2007, were on their way to the Veterans Inaugural Ball when they became separated from the rest of the group headed to the galas.
Manion said about 75 protesters got in between her and Looney and the entrance to the event. She said they got very angry and converged on the two women. They were pushed, called vile names and their clothes were drawn on with permanent marker.
Eventually, the two women got away from the angry mob.
“To witness this act, and to see – I hate to even refer to it as protesting, because it was an accelerated version of that to say the least – was really hard when we try to instill unity versus creating more division,” Looney said.
“We understand more than most how fortunate we are to live in a country where we can demonstrate and share our different beliefs,” Manion wrote in a commentary for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But my question for those who chose to take this route Friday is this: Are you truly accomplishing anything by inciting hate?”
The women said they were not there for political reasons and, according to Manion, they support President Trump the same as they “supported the previous administration and just like we will support every future administration that the American people elect.”
