BOZEMAN, Mont. (Ammoland.Com) – It doesn’t get much closer than only 18 yards to stare eye-to-eye with a bull elk on public land in northeast Utah. That’s exactly what Randy Newberg, Hunter did on this week’s Leupold’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg as he received an unexpected Utah archery tag during the pre-rut.
Tune in to Leupold’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg on Sportsman Channel on Wednesday, July 22 at 9:30 p.m. MT. Watch a preview here: http://www.thesportsmanchannel.com/shows/fresh-tracks-randy-newberg/
“The reason I call this ‘unexpected’ is someone returned this tag. So when the Utah called and asked if I could use this tag, all I could say was ‘uh yeah!’” stated Newberg. “There is so much hunting opportunity in Utah with thousands of acres of public land. The kind of hunt I’m doing on this show, anyone can do here in Utah.”
This is Newberg’s first time hunting Utah, so he had to rely on his fellow hunters on HuntTalk forum and other online research. Once he’s on the ground, a few trial and errors, and close calls, Newberg stumbles across a large watering hole. He knows this is the perfect spot to set up, so he creates a brush blind and then sits and waits. Before long, a large 6×6 bull elk walks near Newberg, but he’s coming in the backside of the blind – an area Newberg didn’t calculate as well for shooting and camera lanes. The elk stops at 18 yards and stares Newberg and his cameraman down….will Newberg be able to draw back his bow without spooking the animal?
