In an announcement for a protest of the National Rifle Association at it’s upcoming annual meeting, Everytown for Gun Safety released a video that pokes fun at the NRA’s use of fear in its promotion of guns and gun rights.
The video shows children dressed in suits and wearing glasses repeat inflammatory statements by the NRA’s head honcho, Wayne LaPierre, who often paints the world as a dangerous and harsh environment filled with people trying to rob, rape and murder you and yours.
“We know, in the world that surrounds us, there are terrorists, and home invaders and drug cartels and carjackers and knockout gamers, rapers, haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all,” LaPierre said last year in Indianapolis at the NRA’s annual meeting.
The 2015 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits kicks off Friday in Nashville and runs throughout the weekend. The event is part membership appreciation and part fundraiser, but it also allows the gun lobby to comment on the current state of gun politics.
Last year — a big election year — the NRA’s message was a direct response to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg injecting $50 million into the then newly established Everytown with unofficial NRA spokesmen saying, “He’s one guy with millions. We’re millions with $25,” suggesting Everytown’s agenda is that of a lone billionaire so join the masses of the NRA instead.
In 2013, the NRA reaffirmed its message to “Stand and Fight,” which originally launched at the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade Show a few months before. The slogan refers to fighting the looming threat of federal gun control measures in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Everytown plans to host a rally against the NRA and expand on its new message, “Stop Crazytown,” a comment on expanding gun rights to include areas that are currently off limits like schools.
