Two weeks after he escaped from a North Carolina jail, an inmate was found dead in a field, missing his head.
Kelvin Singleton, 26, was in jail for an armed robbery he committed in January. One day before a scheduled transfer where he was due to face a separate assault charge, Singleton escaped from jail by threatening a guard with a shank that had been constructed from a toothbrush. Despite extensive search efforts, he was not initially found.
Then, on April 7, hunters discovered a body in field. The body was naked, headless and partially decomposed. Using fingerprints and tattoos, authorities later identified the body, which was there an estimated two weeks, as Singleton.
At this point, authorities have no suspect and no motive, but are looking into the possibility that Singleton’s death may have been gang-related.
Chowan County Sherriff Dwayne Goodwin said he has been in law enforcement for 25 years and this appears to be one of the most bizarre crimes he has ever seen.
