Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was extradited to the United States Thursday to face drug trafficking and other charges.
Guzman was brought across the border by way of El Paso, Texas, then around 5:30 p.m. was placed on a plane bound for New York, one of several U.S. jurisdictions where he faces charges.
The infamous cartel kingpin spent years on the run from authorities following two prison escapes, the most recent of which was made out of a mile-long tunnel that was started in his cell’s shower.
Following his recapture in a January 2016 raid that left five dead, Guzman has been held in Ciudad Juarez, where he has continued to fight the extradition.
