Six months after he escaped a maximum security prison, drug kingpin Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman-Loera was recaptured Friday and returned to the same prison he escaped.
Guzman was arrested following a military raid that left five suspects dead in Los Mochis, a coastal city in his native northwestern state of Sinaloa, Mexico’s Attorney General Arely Gomez told reporters.
Hours after the raid, Guzman was returned to the Altiplano prison, located about 55 miles west of Mexico City.
Gomez explained that authorities were able to track down and arrest the drug lord thanks in part to his ego. Guzman had reached out to producers in the hope of making a biographical film.
In July, Guzman escaped from the prison after serving 17 months. He slipped thorugh a hole in his cell’s shower, climbed on a motorcycle mounted on rails and traveled one mile through a tunnel to freedom.
