A Seattle man shot in a drug deal shootout was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for charges related to illegally possessing stolen firearms.
According to a Justice Department news release, 25-year-old Frankie Manuel Miranda was involved in an August 2015 shootout inside a vehicle at a downtown Seattle gas station. The shooting came as a result of a drug deal gone bad.
Just before the gun battle, Miranda and another man parked at the gas station. The gunfight then erupted after two men got into the back seat of the car. Wafi Kilaouy, 22, was shot in the head and killed, and Miranda and a third man, Dion Hooks, were both shot but survived. The driver managed to flee the scene unharmed.
The gas station gun battle followed two other incidents in which Miranda possessed stolen firearms. The defendant also pleaded guilty to possessing a stolen .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun in 2013 and possessing a stolen Glock .357 semi-automatic handgun in 2014.
“The Defendant armed himself not once, but three times with a firearm,” U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik said during the sentencing. “His decisions resulted in tragic consequences and death.”
“This case demonstrates yet again that guns and drugs don’t mix,” said Annette L. Hayes, U.S. Attorney of the Western District of Washington. “The devastating results are clear – one dead and a number of others who came far too close to the unthinkable. My office is steadfastly committed to working with our state and local partners to bring federal charges against convicted felons who flout the law and illegally possess firearms.”
The Seattle Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
