Doug Koenig Wins European Bianchi Cup
Philippsburg, Germany –-(Ammoland.com)- Doug Koenig won his 3rd European Bianchi Cup at a BDMP sponsored competition in Philippsburg, Germany.
This was Koenig’s second trip to the Philippsburg range complex.
In 2007, Koenig won the European Bianchi Cup at the same location.
In May 2011, Koenig shot a record setting score of 1920-187xs at the National Action Pistol Championship (Bianchi Cup) in Columbia, Missouri. At the European match this past weekend, Koenig shot the same score. Koenig’s 1920-187x score has never been equaled by any other shooter in any major action pistol match – and he has accomplished that feat three times. Koenig holds the record for the highest score ever shot at the European Bianchi Cup matches. In 1999, in Terni, Italy, Koenig fired a 1920-187x at the first European “Cup.”
Action shooting consists of four stages. A practical stage, a barricade stage, a falling plate stage, and a moving target stage. The four stages do not follow a specific order but the national and world championships usually schedule the “super squad” to finish the match at the moving target event – on the last day. The “mover” is a challenging event and often separates the very tight group of competitors that compete on the final day.
This is Koenig’s third European Bianchi Cup – in as many tries. He said that his travels to Europe have been fun and that the long trip has not been a factor in his shooting. Just last year, Koenig won the World Action Pistol Championship in Australia after an exhausting trip.
“These international trips,” said Koenig, “always present a challenge on and off the range. I have to deal with all sorts of changes and there can be a language problem. All in all, it is a great experience to shoot these international matches.”
Koenig took his film crew with him to the European Bianchi Cup. Koenig’s new television show, Doug Koenig’s Championship Season, debuted on the Sportsman Channel last week and his third European “Cup” championship was recorded for use on the show. After the end of the match, Koenig headed out to a rural part of Germany in order to do some hunting – also filmed for broadcast on his show. “That is another bonus. I get to go hunting right after these matches. I have hunted in a number of spots around the world and it is always exciting to hunt new game.” Not long ago, Koenig hunted in New Zealand.
Koenig has won national and world championships in pistol events, shotgun events, and rifle events. A professional shooter, Koenig has dominated competitive pistol shooting for the last fifteen years. Koenig has won seventeen Masters International Championships, three World Speed Shooting Championships, an IPSC World Championship, four World Action Pistol Championships (holds World Record Score), thirteen Sportsman’s Team Challenge Championships, a World All-Around Championship, three European Bianchi Cups, and thirteen National Action Pistol Championships (Bianchi Cup).
