Being a legal gun owner in Kenya isn’t easy, but neither is looking at these photos of confiscated firearms being torched.
In spite of stringent gun laws and regulations, thousands of illegal guns are brought into Kenya each year, and the country continues to fight violence at the hands of extremists. In nine years, officials have confiscated more than 5,250 firearms and those guns were recently rounded up to be destroyed.
Deputy President William Ruto presided over the firearm inferno, which consisted of three stacks of handguns and long guns, each stack standing about 15 feet tall.
It’s estimated that there are still about 500,000 illegal owned guns in the country, most of which are used for cattle raids, robberies and extremist attacks.
